朝夕の風に秋の気配が混じり始める9月。京都では、五節句を締めくくる「重陽（ちょうよう）の節句」の季節を迎えます。古来、菊の芳香によって邪気を祓い、無病息災と延命長寿を願うこの月に呼応するのが、9月の花札「菊」の札たちです。

10点札（タネ札）の「菊に盃（さかずき）」をはじめ、絢爛に咲き誇る菊の花々。この9月の世界観には、日本人が受け継いできた命への祝祭と、鮮烈な意匠美が凝縮されています。

吉祥の極み「重陽の節句」と菊の力


花札の9月を象徴する菊は、中国の「菊水伝説」に由来します。陰陽思想において、奇数は縁起の良い「陽の数」とされ、その最大値である「9」が重なる9月9日は、一年で最も吉祥のエネルギーに満ちた日とされてきました。

平安の貴族たちは菊の花に真綿を被せて夜露と香りを移した「菊の被綿（きせわた）」で肌を拭い、江戸の町衆は菊の花弁を浮かべた「菊酒」を酌み交わしました。

3月の桜と合わせて「花見酒」、8月の月と合わせて「月見酒」。季節の情景を愛でながら盃を傾ける風流な役の要となるのが、この「菊に盃」です。

オリジナルの世界を揺るがす「白い蛇」の降臨


伝統的な花札の9月には、菊と盃、そして短冊のみが描かれ、生き物の姿はありません。しかし、「京都アート花札」の9月をご覧いただくと、菊の茂みや盃の周りを、しなやかに這う「白い蛇（白蛇）」の姿が目に飛び込んできます。

盃を掲げ持つように寄り添い、花々の間からちょろちょろと顔を覗かせる白蛇の姿。伝統の静謐な構図に、神秘的で少しユーモラスな生命のドラマを宿すことで、クラシカルな図案が現代の絵画として鮮烈に生まれ変わりました。

As September brings the first cool breezes of autumn to Kyoto, we celebrate Choyo no Sekku (the Chrysanthemum Festival), a traditional occasion dedicated to wishing for good health and longevity. The September Hanafuda cards, headlined by the iconic "Chrysanthemum and Sake Cup" (Kiku ni Sakazuki), reflect this deep-rooted cultural reverence.

In traditional card combinations like "Hanami-zake" (Cherry Blossom Viewing Sake) and "Tsukimi-zake" (Moon Viewing Sake), the sake cup serves as the central bridge celebrating seasonal beauty and vitality.

The Mysterious White Snake: A Symbol of Rebirth and Good Fortune

In Japanese lore, the white snake is revered as a divine messenger of Benzaiten, symbolizing continuous rebirth, immortality, and prosperity.
