こんにちは。ARTRAD KYOTOの安河内です。 7月。京都の街は祇園祭の熱気に包まれ、夏の本番を迎えます。しかし、花札の世界において7月を涼やかに彩るのは、秋の七草の筆頭である「萩（はぎ）」です。

種札（10点札）に描かれているのは、風流に揺れる萩の草むらと、そこにぽつんと佇む一頭の「猪（いのしし）」。

一見すると、繊細な植物と野生味あふれる獣という、少し不思議な組み合わせに思えるかもしれません。今回は、この7月の札に隠された、日本人の優れたデザイン感覚について紐解いてみましょう。

写実を超えた「粋」な取り合わせ

日本の伝統的な絵画や詩歌には、古くから「取り合わせ」という美学があります。相性の良いもの、あるいはあえて相反するものを組み合わせることで、お互いの魅力を引き立てる手法です。

萩はしなやかで優美な「静」を象徴し、猪は直線的に突き進む「動」や、前進あるのみという不退転の強さを象徴します。

猪をご覧いただくと分かるように、猪の中にまるで「着ぐるみ」のようにして、一人の人物が潜み、こちらをじっと見つめています。

力強い野生の獣そのものを描くのではなく、その中に人間のような存在が溶け込んでいる。このマジカルな表現によって、古典的な「猪」というモチーフが、現代の私たちの心に響く、遊び心に満ちたモダンアートへと見事にアップデートされているのです。

Hello. This is Hiroshi Yasukochi from ARTRAD KYOTO. In July, the streets of Kyoto are wrapped in the vibrant energy of the Gion Matsuri festival as midsummer arrives. However, in the world of Hanafuda, the motif that gracefully cools the month of July is bush clover (Hagi), the foremost of the seven autumn herbs.

The 10-point seed card depicts a wild boar standing quietly amidst a thicket of gently swaying bush clover. At first glance, this pairing of a delicate plant and a fierce, wild beast might seem unusual. Today, let us unveil the masterful sense of Japanese design hidden within this July card.

The "Iki" Art of Pairing Beyond Realism

Traditional Japanese art and poetry have long embraced the aesthetics of "toriawase" (pairing). It is a method of bringing together elements that complement each other, or intentionally contrasting opposites, to elevate the unique charm of both. The bush clover symbolizes a supple and graceful "stillness," while the wild boar represents a straightforward "motion" and an unyielding strength that only moves forward. By housing these two opposing forces within a single small rectangular card, a beautiful tension and a narrative depth are born. Instead of merely capturing a natural landscape, it merges meaning and symbolism to create entirely new value. This design philosophy is a highly progressive form of creativity that directly connects to modern graphic art.

The July card, illustrated by Kanako Tateyama, reinterprets the pale purple of the bush clover and the raw vitality of the wild boar through a modern color landscape.

This composition is uniquely defined by Tateyama's signature, magical worldview. As seen in image_fec5da.png, a person is tucked inside the boar almost like a costume, gazing out intently. Rather than simply drawing a powerful wild beast, a human-like presence is blended seamlessly within it. Through this playful and captivating expression, the classical "boar" motif is spectacularly updated into a piece of modern art that speaks to contemporary sensibilities. Simply displaying it in your living room vividly brings the historic, sophisticated essence of Japanese "iki" into modern daily life.
